the Yoruba Council of Elders has condemned the position of the National Assembly on the new amendments proposed to the 1999 Constitution.
The Senate and the House of Representatives rejected the devolution of power to states during voting on the proposed amendments to the constitution.
Speaking through its Secretary General, Dr. Kunle Olajide, YCE condemned what it described as the lawmakers’ rejection of the peoples’ call for the restructuring of Nigeria, noting that the country is being run by a decree established by the military to favour a few people and a section of the country.
Olajide said, “Piecemeal amendment of the 1999 Constitution which is Decree 24 of the military era cannot take us anywhere. In fact, what the National Assembly did was creation of a prelude to doomsday in Nigeria. I understand that if the lawmakers had given the power to the states, they will become irrelevant at the centre.”
