The Essential Phone can take a lot of damage without missing a beat

Andy Rubin’s Essential phone came out of almost nowhere and while the brand is relatively unknown for most ‘non-techie’ types, Rubin’s new phone company certainly has our attention. While Essential’s long-term viability as a brand is still unknown, we can’t deny that this phone stands out thanks to a combination of factors including limited modular support, use of less common materials like titanium and ceramic, and its tall nearly bezel-free display.

But does Rubin’s design decisions make for a durable experience, or do they actually make it less impervious to damage? Thankfully, a new video from JerryRigEverything sheds some light on the question.

As you likely already know, JerryRig is known for being quite brutal during his durability tests, arming himself with various tools aimed at seeing how far the phone will go before it takes damage. Luckily for Essential and Andy Rubin, their first flagship is up to the job — equaling or besting phones like the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8. In fact, the phone’s back and side were able to take significantly more damage, illustrating just how much better titanium and ceramic are over glass and aluminum.

Of course, just because it’s durable doesn’t mean it’s the phone for you. For more details on the Essential, be sure to check out our full review. What do you think of the Essential phone, would you like to see more phones adopt ceramic and titanium, even if it means adding a little bit more to the price tag?
