A 42-year medical doctor, Tony Nwoye, has emerged the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the November 18 poll in Anambra State.

Nwoye, in what was adjudged a very transparent and peaceful primary, beat Senator Andy Uba and the APC’s national auditor, George Moghalu, and nine others to clinch the ticket.

He polled 2146 votes while his closest rival, Uba, got 931 votes. Moghalu scored a total of 525 votes to emerge third in the race.

Born on September 13, 1974, Nwoye attended Metropolitan Secondary School, Onitsha for his secondary education from where he proceeded to study medicine at the University of Nigeria, Enugu campus and Ebony State University where he was certified as a medical doctor.

Nwoye started his political career as a medical student where he functioned in different capacities as a leader. He reportedly championed the development of student unionism. He later became the first medical student to become the speaker of the student union house of representatives at the University of Nigeria. He received an award from the then Vice Chancellor, Prof Ginigeme Mbanefo, for the role he played in fighting cultism in the school.

He became the national president of National Association Nigerian Students in December, 2003.

He became Assistant Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Anambra State PDP in 2005 and by 2006, at the age of 3, he became the chairman of the State Executive Committee of the Anambra State PDP.

In 2013, he contested for the governorship seat of the state on the platform of the PDP where he came second to the incumbent Governor of the state, Willie Obiano, of the All progressives Grand Alliance.

Nwoye is currently in the National Assembly, representing Anambra East/Anambra West Constituency.

Obiano had earlier in the month secured the governorship ticket of All Progressives Grand Alliance for the November poll while Osita Chidoka secured the ticket of the UPP. Godwin Ezeemo is the PPA candidate.

Other results of the primary election are Paul Chukwuma 110 votes; Nonso Madu, 21 votes; George Moghalu, 525 votes; Barth Nwibe, 414 votes; Mike Nwike, 20 votes; Chike Obidigbo, 22 votes and Donatus Okonkwo, 10 votes.

Others are John Bosco Onunkwo, 85 votes; Uchendu Adaobi, 1 vote and  Obinna Uzor, 17 votes.

Thirty one invalid votes were recorded in the exercise.
