A Lagos State Magistrate’s Court in Ogba on Wednesday issued a bench warrant on an ex-employee of the Punch Nigeria Limited, Olamide Fashanu, who is facing a N4m theft charge.
The police are prosecuting Fashanu, a former advert executive with the Punch Nigeria Limited, for allegedly stealing the sum of N4, 936,805 belonging to the company.
The offence is said to be contrary to and punishable under section 284 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
At the resumed proceedings on Wednesday, Fashanu was not in court and was not represented by any counsel.
The Police Inspector, Joseph Ajebe, who informed the court that the surety of the defendant was not also present, prayed the magistrate to issue a bench warrant on him.
Fashanu’s father who was not recognised by the court told the court that his son was not available in court due to the fact that he was very sick.
The presiding magistrate, Mr. Oyetade Komolafe, who showed his disapproval on the absence of the defendant said, “You are in court without the defendant and you are now telling us that he is very sick. Do you think that is what bail is all about or how it works?”
Komolafe granted the prosecutor’s prayer and issued a bench warrant on the defendant.
Komolafe adjourned till September 6, 2017 for mention.
