The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry has praised local enterprises for their resilience, maintenance of standards and innovative practices despite the economic headwinds in the country.

The President, LCCI, Dr. Nike Akande, stated this at the chamber’s 2017 Commerce and Industry Awards in Lagos on Monday.

Over 18 firms emerged recipients of various award categories such as Corporate Social Responsibility in Medical Science, Public Private Partnership Award, and Infrastructure Project of the Year Award.

According to Akande, the purpose of the award is to celebrate private and public institutions operating in Nigeria for their best business practices, growth through innovations, business sustainability and positive impact on the society.

“We are today celebrating enterprises that have excelled in the economy amidst multitude of challenges in the investment environment. We are also excited that many of them are indigenous enterprises,” she said.

Akande noted that there was no perfect time to make an impact in any system, adding that while the government was fixing the power sector, security challenges and foreign exchange issues, the private sector must move on with the business of creating wealth.

She added that the process of selecting nominees and award winners was very painstaking as there were many entries from virtually all sectors of the economy.

Also speaking during the event, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Mr. Rotimi Ogunleye, assured members of the business community that the state was committed to providing enabling environment for them to thrive.

He said that his administration had made remarkable progress to key into the Federal Government’s ease of doing business mandate.

The governor said he would continue to initiate policies to support businesses and commended members of the Organised Private Sector for their doggedness and resilience despite the harsh terrain in Nigeria.

Ambode explained that the OPS was the primary engine for driving economic growth and development.
