Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu has said that the policy to merge Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK), Islamic Religious Knowledge (IRK) and Social Studies into one elective subject by the Ministry of Education was implemented by the previous administration led by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The merging of the two subjects had raised a lot of controversy, particularly among Christians with many tagging it as a move by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to islamize the country.
The National Assembly later revoked the merge after series of queries, particularly from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Even though the merger of the 2 subjects have been reversed, the controversy is yet to fully die down, as a lot of people are still holding on firmly to the believe that Buhari has an agenda to impose Islam on everyone in the country.
The Minister of Education has come out to clarify that the merger was not a policy developed by Buhari or by the Buhari administration, rather the policy was developed in 2012 by the Goodluck Administration and implemented in 2014. This was communicated in a tweet from the official twitter handle of the federal government.

Adamu Adamu claimed that the policy had always been on ground. He stated that he was briefed about the policy when he was appointed as the minister for education, but the policy was jettisoned by the National Council on Education in September 2016.
The IRK/CRk policy has been seen on so many front by so many people, while the official claim is that the merger is to reduce the number of subjects offered by secondary school students.
Most Christians see it as a plot to islamize the country, others see it as a necessary move which would promote peaceful co-existence among adherents of both religion, as learning more about the other’s religion would help understand them better.
