The media buzzed nationwide when, a few years ago, the 0809ja for Life theme song made its debut. Even kids caught the fever. Etisalat Nigeria had a magnificent run and in its 9th year of operations in Nigeria, it morphed into a new brand.
The new company, 9Mobile, appears to have taken its name from the flagship dial number 0809. Right now, they are out with the old and in with the new. It’s a new corporation with a brand new brand identity and logo to boot. The logo has a very visible number 9. We took a closer look at the logo and we believe we’ve decoded the “hidden messages” in it.
FULL DISCLOSURE: This is just us playing Sherlock here; 9Mobile has neither accepted nor rejected our “findings”.
So here’s letting you in on the secrets of what we think 9Mobile is saying with its irresistible new logo.
WiFi Signal
The WiFi signal at the top right of the new logo depicts the strength of the 9Mobile data network which many IT-inclined echo as world-class. Etisalat was undoubtedly one of the fastest data networks in Nigeria, blazing with speeds of over 150mbps, which endeared them to many in Nigeria and helped them add to their ever-increasing young customer base. Now, as 9Mobile, we can only imagine that when it comes to data speed, they can only go faster.
Bullseye
The two rings and a bullseye in the 9mobile logo depicts their goal-oriented focus in delivering best of its kind communication services to subscribers. We believe 9mobile remains dedicated in giving customers cutting edge tools with its amazing network speeds and nationwide coverage. This will go a long way in restoring confidence of subscribers who may have faltered due to the new identity.
Headphone
When you turn the 9 upside down, it looks like a headphone. We believe the headphone represents the company’s affinity to music. For many years, as Etisalat, they promoted young Nigerian acts through event sponsorships and the Cloud 9 platform. It looks like the beat goes on, even as the company becomes 9Mobile.
Gearshift Lever
Just as in cars, a gearshift lever signifies control over speed. We think this visual icon symbolises 9Mobile ceding control to its subscribers, especially as it concerns choices. Also, by becoming 9Mobile in its ninth-year of operations, the company shifted gears.
A Tennis Ball
You can’t be great at tennis without a strong serve. A tennis ball may represent 9Mobile’s resolve to play the long game in Nigeria while also continuing to serving a series of hit products and services to its subscribers.
A Golf Club
Golf is about the swing. Turn the 9 in the logo upside down and you’ll see a golf club. It’s time for 9Mobile to tee off. Maybe, like it did when it launched as Etisalat nine years ago, it will score a hole in one with Nigeria.
A Wheel
The world changed with the invention of the wheel. Things began to move faster and more easily, paving the way for even bigger inventions. We are convinced the wheel in the 9Mobile logo represents the ease of access the company promises and perhaps a promise to never stop moving forward.
A whistle
The whistle is loud and when you blow it very hard, the sound reaches quite far. What is mobile telephony if not the spreading of ideas, feelings, and passions far and wide.
Bottle Opener
Whenever a bottle is opened, refreshment is promised. This sort of refreshment and relaxation is what 9Mobile offers from the pain and heartache of terrible data speeds or epileptic coverage. And switching to 9mobile has been refreshing for the brand. Also, this is the time for the brand to celebrate a rebirth.
