The bodies of Miss Honduras 2014 winner Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, and her sister Sofia, 23, were found earlier this week, having gone missing a week ago.
Sofia’s boyfriend, Plutarco Ruiz, reportedly confessed to police after being arrested that he and Sofia had a heated argument before he shot her, and then turned the gun on Maria as she tried to escape.
He said he became jealous when he saw her dancing with another man at his birthday party which sparked the argument later the same night.
Maria was due to fly to London the day after her murder to represent Honduras in the Miss World Competition.
A school friend of Maria said of her: ‘She was simple, humble, a total innocent smiling and without malice.’
The mother of the sisters claimed Mr Ruiz called her the morning after their disappearance, telling her they had gone home with someone else.
Police also arrested a second man in connection with the murders, and are still searching for other suspects in connection to the case.
Honduras in central America has the highest recorded homicide rate in the world, with a disproportionately large amount of violence directed towards women, according to human rights organisations..METRO UK -
