Telcos Lose 4 Million Subscribers in One Month

Statistics from NCC (Nigeria Communications Commission) showed that the growth of the four GSM network operators (Airtel, Glo, MTN, and 9mobile) had reduced collectively by a negative 21.54 percent. Upon the 1.5trillion added to the Nigeria economy by the telecommunications sector.


The number of active telephone line dropped at high speed by four Million between June to July and increased inactive lines to 16 Million in seven months. And also, subscriptions to telephone services fell from 143 million in June to 139 million in July.

Not only that, it also affected the telephone density - is the number of telephone connections for every hundred individuals living within an area, which fell from 110 percent to 99 percent by July.

NCC statistics showed that MTN still has 35.8 market share with 49.7 million subscribers, Globacom with 26.8 percent market share of 37 million subscribers, Airtel controls 24 percent market share with 34.1 million subscribers and lastly, 9mobile has 12.7 market shares with 17.6 million subscribers after losing four Million subscribers due to its protracted $1.2billion syndicated loans from 13 bank.

However, it was confirmed that the commission was aware of the mobile subscription loss in the country.
