President Muhammadu Buhari is set to travel to the United States of America next week to speak at the United Nations General Assembly this September.
The president was rumoured to be preparing for a trip to the US last week but the reports were debunked by the minister of information, Mr Lai Mohammed.
President Buhari’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, Mr Garba Shehu on Sunday however confirmed the veracity of the new report of the president’s trip to the US.
According to Mr Shehu, the president received an invitation to speak at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 and was prepared to honour the invitation.
“I cannot tell you the time he will be going because it can change but I know he is expected to be the eighth speaker at the UN. So, he will be there and he will speak,” Shehu said.
Since his return to the country on August 20 after a prolonged medical vacation in the United Kingdom, President Buhari has restricted his public appearances to a few occasions and has only visited his country home in Daura, Katsina state.
He has also attended only one federal executive council meeting in the three weeks he has been back in the country thereby leaving many curious about his ability to cope with the exacting demands of his office.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who served as acting president during Buhari’s medical leave has continued to chair the important meetings of government as well as hosting members of the United States Congress as well as the United Kingdom Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and his team at the Villa.
According to the Punch, the Nigerian president is listed as number seven on the provisional list of speakers and is expected to speak after the leaders of Brazil, the United States, Guinea, Switzerland, Jordan and Slovakia.
