Tips on a stress-free family holiday

Elizabeth Badejo

A family holiday can be a fun experience for everyone if everything goes according to plan; but in many cases too, it can be a very harrowing experience if certain guidelines are not put in place right from the start. As much as families are expected to enjoy one another’s company, it will interest you to know that this is becoming impossible for couples to spend time together and little or no time for family pleasures too.

Are you worrying about how you would cope on your next family holiday? Setting guidelines can help alleviate your fears and anxieties so that you can all have a great time together.

Holidays are for fun

Holidays are not for working; they are for fun and fun alone. Perhaps you have often carried your workload along on your family holidays in the past and wondering why you had never really enjoyed yourself, set a guideline on your next holiday and drop everything that is work related. Focusing on yourselves and your children if they go with you is the most important memory you can ever have on holiday and that will always be a great reason to go again each year. Imagine if your children can get your 100 per cent attention once in a while if you are a very busy parent, this can compensate the lost times and give them a sense of understanding that you truly care.

Let the kids play& learn

If you cast your minds back to when you were young, playing outdoor with other children was the only reasonable thing to do and while boys rolled tyres on the street, girls made stew from sand and leaves and childhood made so much sense. Today, we barely allow our children to play in the garden and getting dirty is strictly not an option for many toddlers. As a matter of fact, holiday is spent going on a shopping spree. Parents and children no longer fancy holiday if they cannot show off to the other child.

Holidays can also be memorable if your children are allowed to play outdoors in the gardens, build sand castles on the beach and go on day trips to places of interest. Also set a good bedtime routine for the little ones so that they can get enough sleep and wake up nice and bright each day.

Reminisce daily

One of the best rules you can set while on holiday is communication. This is a great time to interact about everything you do together which gives you all a sense of fulfilment as a family while on holiday. Set a time towards the evening when everyone is settling down for dinner to discuss the day’s events and what everyone was up to during the day. This is great especially if you have teenagers who went out to have some fun away from the rest of the family.

NOTE

  • Family holidays can become a great experience for your children if you make it memorable for them; the world is involving and so many things are happening daily, plan holiday trips to places where your children can develop their minds and discover many different possibilities too.

Family holidays can become one of the best values you will be leaving behind when they become parents themselves.
