The police on Tuesday arraigned three suspected Internet fraudsters, who allegedly swindled the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa out of N9.2m.
The accused were said to have hacked into the lawmaker’s Facebook account, where they extracted “vital information,” which they subsequently used to withdraw funds from his bank account.
The defendants – Frank Nwokobia, Ezeoke Kanayochukwu and Godwin Essien – were arraigned before Justice Chuka Obiozor at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The five charges pressed against them border on conspiracy, impersonation, identity theft, and fraud.
The prosecuting counsel, Williams Ologun, told the court that the defendants acted contrary to the provisions of sections 27(1)(b) and 22(2)(b)(ii) of Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act, 2015.
He told the court that they were arrested at different locations in Delta State.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty.
Following an application by their lawyer, Mr. Ali Ada, Justice Obiozor admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N5m each with one surety in like sum.
The judge said the surety must be residents of Lagos, own landed property in the state, and show evidence of tax payment in the last three years.
He adjourned the case till September 8, 2017, and ordered that the defendants should be remanded in Ikoyi Prison pending the perfection of their bail conditions.
