Ogbonnaya Ikoku, Umuahia
Police operatives attached to the Central Police Station, Aba in Abia State, have arrested a suspected armed robber identified as Obasi Chibuike, who allegedly wore a police bulletproof jacket while extorting money from motorists on the highway.
But the suspect said he picked the jacket from the roadside to cover his body from cold, while he was controlling traffic on the road.
He said, “I didn’t know there were live cartridges and jackknife inside the bulletproof jacket that I wore until I was caught by the police. I’m not a thief; I just collected the jacket in a compound close to the road, where I was controlling the traffic under the rain.”
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Adeleye Oyebade, who paraded the suspect at the command headquarters in Umuahia, said the suspect was arrested on Milverton Road in Aba by a police patrol team attached to the CSP, Aba.
He said, “On sighting the patrol team, Chibuike fled the scene, but our men caught up with him. The suspect has confessed to being a member of a four-man robbery gang, terrorising Aba and its environs.”
Oyebade said efforts were ongoing to arrest the other members of the suspect’s gang as well as recovering their weapons.
