The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bayelsa State Council, has asked the authorities of the state-owned Niger Delta University, Amassoma, to re-establish the Department of Mass Communication at the institution.
The state Chairman, NUJ, John Angese, made the call during a courtesy visit by the union to the acting Vice Chancellor of the NDU, Prof. Samuel Edoumiekumo, in his office at the main campus of the school.
The 17-year-old university was operating the Department of Mass Communication until the programme was stopped after running into some hitches.
Angese, who congratulated Edoumiekumo on his recent appointment as the acting VC of the NDU, said that the NUJ was concerned that Mass Communication was not being taught at the institution.
He noted that many persons, including practising journalists, who would want to further their studies in the department, were forced to seek admission in universities outside Bayelsa.
Angese urged Edoumiekumo to ensure that the Mass Communication Department is restored in the school.
