The Nigeria Basketball Federation on Wednesday named Alex Nwora as coach of the national men’s team D’Tigers ahead of the 2017 FIBA Africa Basketball Championship in Tunisia and Senegal.
D’Tigers are the defending champions of the Afrobasket holding from September 8 to 16. Nwora replaces William Voigt, who led Nigeria to the Afrobasket title in 2015.
The NBBF announced on their Twitter handle on Wednesday that Nwora would lead the team to the competition.
In a statement, NBBF president, Musa Ahmadu-Kida, said the federation appointed the Erie Community College Basketball team coach Nwora because he is qualified for the post.
He said, “We started this project with D’Tigress with the appointment of Sam Vincent, Mfon Udoka, Peter Ahmedu and Okworogun Ochuko.
“There is no point giving out national team jobs to expatriates when we have Nigerians all over the world, who are duly qualified to get the job done.”
The federation said Nwora would be assisted by coaches Aderemi Adewunmi of Kwara Falcons and Abdulrahman Mohammed of Gombe Bulls. The two coaches guided their teams to the top of the Atlantic and Savannah Conferences of the Kwese Premier Basketball League.
Nwora guided Cape Verde to the 2013 Afrobasket where they defeated Nigeria 79-76 in the fifth-place playoffs.
