The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nasarawa State Command, on Thursday arrested a dismissed soldier, Bala Babaginda, for allegedly duping 27 persons of N4m.
Parading the 32-year-old at the NSCDC headquarters in Lafia, the commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Lawal Bashir-Kano, said the suspect collected various sums of money from his victims, promising to assist them get employment into the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service.
He said the suspect collected N200,000 from one Mr. Ovey Aliku; N100,000 from one Akolo Meyan; and N600,000 from one Kigbu Sunday, among others.
Babaginda, who admitted to collecting the money, said he was only trying to assist the victims get jobs.
The daughter of one of the victims, 22-year-old Daniel Deborah, said Babanginda duped her father in February 2014, after claiming to have “a powerful boss” in Abuja.
She said, “He promised to get jobs for all my father’s children. When my father did not believe him, he (Babangida) said he was only trying to repay my father’s kindness to him during his secondary school days.
“My father died out of frustration because he did not fulfil the promise after collecting a lot of money.”
