The people of Bafin-Etintin community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State on Friday appealed to the state Universal Basic Education Board to come to their aid over the classroom blocks roof in St. Patrick’s Primary School that was destroyed by winds.
The clan head of the community, Peter Obi, told Southern City News that the primary school have been without a roof for the past three months.
Obi added that before the August break, pupils in the school were attending classes under the rain and in the sun.
According to him, it is important for SUBEB to undertake the roofing of the building before the commencement of the new term in September.
He further appealed that the school be given a face-lift by painting the building and provision of modern seats for the pupils.
“This is the only primary school we have in this area. The school have existed for ages and you can see that the structures are getting weaker by the day.
“Some months ago, we witnessed a heavy windstorm in this area and the school was affected and since then, the pupils have been receiving their lectures under the rain and in the sun.
“We are appealing to SUBEB to come to our aid in other to enable our children attend their classes in a comfortable environment,” he said.
Youth leader of the community, Mr. Francis Edam, said some parents were considering relocating their children and wards to another school in view of the dilapidated structures and open roof.
In his reaction to the appeal, the state Chairman of SUBEB, Dr. Stephen Odey, said he was not aware of the incident.
“As we speak, I am not aware. Normally, this kind of report should be accompanied with photographs. The Director of Local Government Education in charge of Boki has not brief me yet on the matter,” he said.
