THE Bayelsa State Government has lamented the low turnout of residents for the national identity registration at the National Identity Management Commission office in the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Jonathan Obuebite, in a statement on Monday, said statistics of persons that had registered in the state showed that the non-indigenes had by far registered more than the indigenes.
He pointed out that the national identity card would in the nearest future become one of the requirements to obtain the Nigerian passport, recruitment into state and federal agencies such as the military and other related agencies of the government.
Obuebite further stated that very soon, persons without valid national identification numbers would be denied admission into federal colleges as well as tertiary institutions across the country.
He advised parents and guardians to make haste and register their children and wards, warning that they might find it difficult to obtain the document later.
“Bayelsans should hurry up and register in the ongoing national identification exercise, because it is going to be very useful to them later, especially for the up and coming ones, who will need it more in the future to actualise so many goals,” he said.
