Governors of the 19 northern states under the aegis of the Northern Governors’ Forum on Friday set up a committee on restructuring with the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, as its chairman.
The NGF made this known in a communiqué released on Friday, in which it said the committee would be expected to collate views from the region on the agitations for the restructuring the country.
The Chairman, NGF, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, had on Thursday said during a meeting with traditional rulers drawn from all parts of the region that the resolution passed at the end of the two-day meeting would be made known to the public.
But in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Kaduna, the governors faulted the current constitution of the Federal Character Commission.
They described the appointments into the Federal Civil Service Commission and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission as lopsided.
Therefore, the governors called for the reconstitution of the FCC in order to address the alleged imbalance in federal government agencies, ministries and departments.
The communiqué was signed by the chairman of the forum and governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, and read by the Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Masari.
On the agitation for restructuring of the country by various groups in the country, the NGF advised proponents and champions of restructuring to express their views within the confines of the constitution.
Other members of the newly constituted committee include the governors of Gombe, Bauchi, Benue and Kaduna states and the Emirs of Kano, Zaria, Gummi.
According to the communiqué, the terms of reference of the committee will be “to collect and collate views regarding various agitations for the restructuring of the country from individuals, groups and corporate organisations in the region.
“It is to come up with acceptable, tenable and sustainable position for the northern region in consonance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, taking into cognisance the current constitutional amendment processes going on in the National Assembly.”
