Serving corp member reportedly died of the dreaded Lassa fever, somewhere in Cross River state.
There seems to be an increase in the death of serving corp members in 2017, as almost 20 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the year.
A corp member serving in Cross River state, identified as Onwuegbuzie Stanley Samuel has been reported dead.
According to reports, the young man died of the Lassa fever disease at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
According to the Cross River state commissioner of health, Dr Inyang Asibong, the Delta-born corp member was admitted at the General Hospital, Obubra, and treated for cerebral malaria for one week before he was transferred to UCTH after his condition got worse.
He was discovered to have had Lassa fever after his blood was tested at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo state.
“The incident started about two weeks ago in Obubra and we all know that the incubation period of Lassa fever is 3-21 days. The deceased is an indigene of Delta State. The last time he travelled to his home in Lagos State was during the Christmas period in December 2016 and came back to Cross River in January 2017. The deceased was living in the corps members’ lodge in Obubra and since he came back in January, he has not left that community. Unfortunately, we finally lost him yesterday. Sadly, the corps member contracted the disease in Cross River.”
The Cross River state coordinator of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Thompson Igbu, said the organisation is putting in tremendous effort to ensure the disease does not spread further than it already has.
According to Dr Igbu, 15 people living in the corper’s lodge in Obubra have been line-listed. He said:
“We have line-listed over 15 persons in Obubra who are `primary contact’ and the hospital where the deceased was first admitted has also been line-listed. We are supporting the state with essential drugs and we are making sure that necessary steps are taken to curb further spread of the disease.”
The chairman of the UCTH medical advisory committee, Dr Ngim Ogbu, said Onwuegbuzie’s death was the second Lassa fever-related death recorded in the state.
He said:
“The body of the deceased has not been sent to the mortuary, this is because we are taking measures to curb further spread of the disease.’’
