Usman Yaya, who had been parading himself as an officer of Nigerian Army, was arrested by Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special offenses Unit, and confessed to be an impostor. It was gathered that the 27-year-old suspect was arrested after he obstructed the enforcement team of the Agency while demolishing shanties occupied by miscreants in Lekki axis of Lagos.
Usman, an indigene of Adamawa State, disclosed that paucity of funds forced him to impersonate the Nigerian Army and extort money from commercial vehicle operators in the axis.

He alleged that he stole the cap from his brother, a staff Sergeant with the Nigeria Army, whom he lived with at Abacha Barracks in Abuja.

The suspect, who resides at White Sand School, Lekki with his friend, Jonathan, confessed that after leaving Abuja for Lagos in February, he had no money to cater for his daily needs.

When sourcing for money became too difficult, Usman said that he decided to start wearing the Nigeria Army cap to extort money from members of the public especially commercial vehicle operators plying Victoria Island and Lekki daily.

He, however, pleaded for pardon, noting that if he is set free, he is willing to stop the illegal act and return the property of Nigeria Army to his brother.

Reacting over the arrest, Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, Olayinka Egbeyemi, disclosed that the suspect obstructed the enforcement team while on duty and beat-up a Para-military officer attached to the Agency.

Egbeyemi stated that the suspect who parades himself as a Staff Sergeant of the Nigeria Army was arrested wearing an Army cap on a mufty dress.

The chairman in a statement by the Head, Public Affairs Unit, Taofeeq Adebayo, on Tuesday, stated further that after diligent investigations, it was discovered he was an imposter, who had been terrorizing residents in the axis.
He, however, disclosed that Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has directed that the suspect is immediately charged to court.
