A baby girl born with a third leg that protruded from her groin area has had the extra limb successfully removed during a complex surgery. The seven-day-old girl, who hasn't been given a name yet, had a fully-formed third leg between her "normal" limbs but was otherwise completely healthy when she was delivered last week.
The deformity was due to a parasitic twin - a rare occurrence seen in one in 100,000 births.
Doctors said the baby will make a full recovery following Sunday's three-hour operation, as her relieved mother hailed the "God-sent" surgeons.
Srilatha Kanchanapally, 25, found out about her child's deformity during a routine scan in December.
Ms Kanchanapally birth at Jangaon district hospital in India on March 21, and two days later the family were moved to Niloufer hospital in Hyderabad for the operation.
Dr K Srinivas, who helped with the complex delivery, said before the surgery: "The extra limb was protruding from the child's pelvis area and can be surgically removed.
"Other than the extra limb, the baby was born with healthy vitals and she is in good health."
Dr Ramesh Reddy, head of department of pediatric surgery at Niloufer Hospital, added: "It's a rare occurrence, seen one in 100,000 births.
