The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions cleared Former Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi to be screened and cleared by the Senate.

News Punch had in two days ago reported that barring last minute change, the Ethics, Privileges and Public Relations Committee of the Senate has completed its investigation of former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and the Senate may confirm him Tuesday for ministerial appointment.

The committee, according to Vanguard News took the decision to clear Amaechi because the case was in court and therefore it could not consider the petition by the Integrity Group. With the clean bill of health given to Amaechi, he would appear before the Senators today for screening.

Few days ago, the Chairman of the Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions Committee of the Senate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu said the report on Amaechi was ready and that it would be laid on Tuesday during plenary. Although Anyanwu was silent on the content of the report on Amaechi, the Senate leader, Ali Ndume said in an interview that the former governor would be screened on Tuesday.

“Quote me, Amaechi will be screened and confirmed because he possesses the qualification to be a minister. I know you are aware that Amaechi has not been convicted of any crime,” Ndume said in an exclusive interview with our correspondent.
To get a soft-landing, seven of the nominees billed to be screened today, visited the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara yesterday.

This is coming amid fears that the nominees from Oyo State, Barr Adebayo Shittu and his Zamfara State counterpart, General Dan Ali (retd) may be dropped. There were indications, yesterday that Shittu may be dropped for Adewole Isaac Folorunsho.

Meantime, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Senator Sam Anyanwu, assured yesterday that reports on the petitions against Amaechi and Aisha Abubakar are ready and will be submitted today before the screening.
