Presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, said this while featuring on a RayPower 100.5FM radio programme, ‘Political Platform.’
Adesina was reacting to the criticisms that the appointments on Thursday, of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chief of Staff as well as those of the Comptroller-Generals of the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service were skewed in favour of the north.
Adesina stated that no one could fault the fact that the appointments were based on merit, noting however, that these were still early days of the administration and that President Buhari was aware of the existence of the federal character principle.
The spokesman stated that the president was trying to get the very best of Nigerians to serve the country, stressing that the appointment to key positions should not be an issue as there will be a balance in the future.
The presidential aide also stressed that the president has prerogative to appoint those that would work with him and assured that the president also remained committed to the deadline of September for the appointment of his cabinet.
Adesina said it would be most unfair of anyone to blame President Buhari for such elective positions such as the National Assembly leadership positions and the hierarchical ones like those of the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the acting chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission..
The presidential aide also stressed that the president has prerogative to appoint those that would work with him and assured that the president also remained committed to the deadline of September for the appointment of his cabinet.
