Wife of Senate President, Mrs Toyin Saraki, was yesterday grilled for several hours by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. She was granted administrative bail.
Mrs Saraki arrived in the EFCC office at about 12.15pm and was immediately ushered into the commission’s interrogation department where she was grilled.
The said petition chronicled how state officials, including Mrs Saraki, former special adviser to the Governor on MDGs, Mr. Ope Saraki, Personal Assistant (PA) to ex-Governor Bukola Saraki, Mr. Abdul Adama from Kogi State, a former commissioner for information, Mr. Tunji Morounfoye, all allegedly worked and defrauded the state of billions of naira between 2003 and 2011.
Although Daily Sun visited the EFCC’s office to follow up on the story, security operatives barred reporters from gaining access to the section where Mrs Saraki was being interrogated. Spokesperson of EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed her visit. He said the wife of the Senate president was at the anti-graft agency’s headquarters to respond to allegations in a petition written against her.
Meanwhile, the anti-graft agency is under immense pressure from some powerful northern politicians and leading senators to discontinue the probe. A reliable source said yesterday there were moves to discontinue the probe. The presidency is under pressure to stop possible arraignment of Mrs Saraki whose ‘harassment’ by EFCC has sparked off a national uproar, with cross-fire accusations.
Mrs Saraki after an intensive grilling by EFCC operatives was granted an administrative bail at about 6.30pm yesterday. Crime Watch Today could not establish as at the Press time if her international passport was seized by the EFCC.
Mrs Saraki is expected to report back at EFCC office in Abuja today for further grilling, as issues that were unresolved yesterday will be ironed out.
