Lagos Gov Race: God Asked Me To Run, Says Ikuforiji

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, western Nigeria, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has disclosed to members of staff of the Assembly that he would run for the 2015 governorship election in the state because God told him to do so.

Ikuforiji, who spoke with the members of staff during a quarterly general meeting within the Assembly complex at the weekend, said he was seeking to contest for the governorship post under the umbrella of his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The meeting is usually organised by the leadership of the House for interaction with the staff.

The Speaker said he had consulted with God and that God had asked him to move on in his bid to be the next governor of the state.

“I have called on God concerning my ambition and He has given me the approval to go ahead,” he disclosed.

His announcement got the staff members at the meeting cheering and prodding him on.

Ikuforiji, who would be Speaker for about 11 years by 2015, also disclosed that he had consulted widely with stakeholders, opinion leaders and his colleagues.
The Speaker recently met with members of the State House of Assembly at his official residence at the GRA area of Ikeja, Lagos where he made similar announcement.

At the weekend meeting, Ikuforiji asserted that he had succeeded in establishing a virile legislative house, promising to build a state where people would be happy.

According to him, “what I am doing is to inform you of my intention. When the time comes, I will do so (announce my intention) and the whole of Lagos will know I did so.”

The Speaker, who commended the management and staff of the Assembly for their professionalism and sense of duty, further thanked them for standing by him to develop the legislature in the state.

He charged them to continue to strive to make the Lagos State legislature an excellent example to the world.

Other aspirants for Lagos’s topmost political seat include Akinwunmi Ambode, a former Accountant-General of the state, Leke Pitan, a former commissioner in the state, Femi Hamzat, a current commissioner in the Babatunde Fashola administration,  and Senator Ganiu Olarenwaju Solomon.
